WASHINGTON, February 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Postal Service said it remains committed to working with all of its stakeholders – including Congress and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – as it continues to implement is fiscally responsible for its Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) program, which is designed to introduce safer and more environmentally friendly vehicles and is working to electrify its delivery fleet as quickly as resources and infrastructure will allow it.

In preparing its Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”) under NEPA, the Postal Service also consulted with several federal agencies and continues to consult with them as it prepares to complete the NEPA process. The NEPA Act ensures that federal agencies carefully consider environmental impacts and reasonable alternatives to a proposed course of action, and the Postal Service believes it has fully met the requirements of the law.

Also over the past year, the Postal Service has made its teams available to congressional policymakers as they continue efforts to secure funding to create a fleet of mostly electric USPS delivery vehicles over the past few years. next 10 years. The NGDV with an internal combustion engine would be a more fuel efficient vehicle compared to the current Long Life Vehicle (LLV), although it is larger. The fuel economy of the NGDV without air conditioning running is 14.7 MPG, compared to the fuel economy of the LLV of 8.4 MPG (which has no air conditioning). The new vehicle would provide Postal Service carriers with many modern safety features, including 360-degree cameras, front and rear automatic braking and a driver airbag.

Recognizing that powertrain technology can change significantly over the 20-year available life of the NGDV, the Postal Service selected a flexible design platform that can adapt to advances in technology. It provides a vehicle platform that can come with an internal combustion engine or battery-electric drivetrain technology.

The combination of NGDV powertrains in the proposed action that is being considered under NEPA would have positive environmental impacts compared to current LLVs due to the reduced number of trips required and better emission controls. These controls would reduce exhaust emissions and help improve air quality compared to the LLVs they are meant to replace.

Postal Service cost estimates include the price of charging infrastructure rather than assuming the availability of public charging, as Postal vehicles must be mass-charged at Postal Service facilities to meet the operational and logistical needs of its carriers. The Postal Service analyzes the capacity of the national and local electrical grid to determine any necessary upgrades at the grid level.

The Postal Service generally does not receive taxpayer money for its operating expenses and depends on the sale of postage, goods, and services to fund its operations.
